(AP) - Memphis coach Tubby Smith says former walk-on Jake McDowell will receive a scholarship for the 2016-17 season.Smith, who is entering his first season as Memphis' coach, said Thursday in a university release that "he and his family have given so much to this program through hard work and dedication." Smith added that "Jake has done everything we have asked, and I am looking forward to coaching him this coming season."McDowell, a guard/forward, played 24 games as a walk-on last season and made one start.He finished the season with 14 total points and nine rebounds.
